Buying Flowers for Birthdays, Anniversaries and Special Occasions: A Simple Guide

There’s very little that says “I’m thinking of you” quite like a bouquet. But when you’re standing in front of a list of options, it can be hard to know what to choose. Which colours? What size? Does it matter what the occasion is?

Here are our florists’ tips for choosing flowers that feel personal, whatever the celebration.

Think about the person, not just the occasion

The best bouquets reflect who they’re for. Before you choose, ask yourself:

  • Do they love bold colour, or are they happier with something soft and understated?

  • Is their home or office bright and busy, or calm and neutral?

  • Do they have a favourite flower or colour you can build around?

If you’re unsure, a mixed seasonal bouquet is a safe and beautiful choice.

Choosing a style that fits

Our Signature Collection offers three styles, designed to suit different tastes:

  • Bright: a cheerful, colourful mix of seasonal flowers in vibrant tones such as coral, pink and purple. A good choice for birthdays and for anyone who needs a little lift.

  • Soft: a gentle, romantic arrangement in blush pinks, creams and pastel shades. A lovely pick for anniversaries, weddings and thank-yous.

  • Fresh: crisp greens, light textures and natural tones, with a clean, modern and relaxed feel. It’s ideal for someone who prefers a more understated look.

Matching the flowers to the occasion

  • Birthdays: go bright and generous. This is the time for colour, energy and a bouquet that makes an entrance.

  • Anniversaries: soft, romantic shades feel timeless. Larger bouquets work well for milestone years.

  • New baby or new home: soft and fresh styles feel welcoming and calm.

  • Thank you or get well soon: a smaller, thoughtful bouquet says plenty, and brightens a home or desk.

  • Just because: the best reason of all. Choose whatever you think they’d smile at.

Choosing the right size

Our bouquets start from £30 and come in five sizes: Classic, Full, Generous, Grand and Statement. Classic is a thoughtful, simple gift, while Grand and Statement are the show-stoppers for big birthdays and anniversaries. If you’re deciding between two sizes, think about where the flowers will go. A smaller home or desk suits a smaller bouquet, while a hallway or dining table can carry something bigger.

Why seasonal flowers make a better gift

Our florists select the freshest flowers available from the market each day and combine them with complementary foliage. Seasonal flowers tend to look their best and last well, and each bouquet reflects what’s at its peak, so no two seasons feel quite the same.

Planning ahead and delivery

Remembering a date is half the battle. When you order, you can choose your preferred delivery date at checkout, so you can sort an anniversary or birthday weeks in advance and know the flowers will arrive on the day. We deliver within 20 miles of Hitchin, and we’re happy to deliver further afield, so just get in touch and we’ll see what we can do.

A few simple tips for happy flowers

  • Trim the stems at an angle and put them in fresh water as soon as they arrive.

  • Change the water every couple of days.

  • Keep them away from direct heat and fruit bowls.
